Mysteel was informed that ukremetallurgprom had submitted a temporary ban on the export of scrap steel to the prime minister, asking him to consider banning the export of scrap steel from Ukraine before December 31, 2023, so as to ensure the steady development of the metallurgical industry and the country’s economy.
The association said that the recovery of the global economy has led to a sharp rise in the price of raw materials, including scrap steel. In the past year, the price of scrap steel has increased from US $265 / ton in May 2020 to US $468 / ton in June 2021, an increase of nearly 80%. In Ukraine, the price gap between domestic trade and export of scrap steel is too large. Even after deducting tariffs and other costs, it can still reach US $100 / ton. The export tariff of scrap steel in Ukraine decreased from 58 euros / ton to 13.5% of the export price, a decrease of 26.8%, which further led to the outflow of scrap steel resources.
From January to may 2021, the export volume of scrap steel in Ukraine increased significantly, with a year-on-year increase of 9 times, reaching 143000 tons. The Association believes that Ukraine’s scrap export volume can reach 1.5 million tons in 2021. If no measures are taken, Ukraine will face a scrap gap of 500000 tons / year, resulting in a 9.5% decline in steel production, resulting in a 5.6% decline in export volume.
